Roll Call #1 : November 2023
An attempt at staying sane while navigating the news cycle of the last month.
INDUSTRY
Powerslide’s very own Kizer has operated a full rebrand, complete with a new team. Yuto Goto and John Bolino are joining Eugen Enin, and one German rider was apparently enough since Jo Zenk is nowhere to be seen. What you can see, though, is the new Cyberzone Crisis edit, and to match the replicant theme, some new high-tech-looking frames bearing the high-tech name of Shift Unlimited. That’s a lot of tech, even by Powerslide’s standards, considering the recent release of the AG60 frames designed by Justin Thursday for the Iqon brand.

In other tech news, Adapt publicly drops the Handmade gimmick, taking the opportunity to also drop one final run of Jon Fromm Brutale skates, in a black colorway this time, and available either boot-only or complete with Fifty50 frames and Red Eye wheels. What we know is the preorder runs until January 21st. What we don’t know is if Adapt also dropped the Polish factory handmaking the skates for them.
PRODUCTS
Roces just introduced their 5th signature skate for pro rider Nils Jansons. It is very pretty. Aptly named Deep Purple, can you tell this Fifth Element boot was inspired by my current Aeon setup? Anyway… Nils filmed with his brother Martins until the first snow hit the streets of Riga, the promo video is being edited at this very moment, and we all know it’s going to be very pretty too.
In other Latvian news, a new Magic Boots drop is also in the works, and from what we’ve been told, there will also be some very nice footage to go along with it. More editing to go through the dark winter months then! Nils is a busy man, and his nights are about to get even shorter, too.

Quickly following up on their first team skate, Mesmer has already announced the second one. Aptly named TS2, it’s also very pretty. Gotta love a nice grey scheme. They’re available for preorder and should be shipping on December 7th. More exciting even, they also made a collab with Plomo with some dark-colored, baggy-looking jeans. Available online, along with a wide range of bundles for those looking to create a unique setup.
In more Disroyal news, they’ve just announced the second Michel Prado skate for Gawds, which looks like some old Joey Chase SSM skins strapped onto their glass-fiber reinforced plastic. Wasting no time, the promo edit is already out, and worth the watch if you manage to sit through the multiple intros.
Fresh off her second place at the Carriers Open, Iqon also welcomes Aarin Gates to the pro team: Congratulations Aarin, and happy birthday too!

The legend goes on, says USD. What that means is, Chris Farmer gets another Sway boot (which would make it Farm’s 10th pro skate?) As should be expected, the promo edit is fire, and we’d like to see someone claim that ender trick has already been done. Definitely worth another watch, along with the b-roll footage from his Plastic Pushers 3 section Cavin has been kind enough to upload for your viewing pleasure.
The Bacethem softgoods collection is finally available for preorder on the Bacemint website, so for once it might not be fully sold out by the time you get this newsletter. Windbreakers, coaches' jackets, hats, shirts, and socks, it’s all rather exquisite, and another perfect excuse to rewatch the edit that blew everyone’s minds this summer.
The skates are ready to ship too, all sizes are in stock including the new not-so-extra-small and shmedium shells, so get yourself a pair on the THEM website.

After Kaltik’s V.2 kid skate last month, USD also brings out a new adaptable skate targeted at the youth, called Glitch. Great initiative, but while the future may be bright, we sure as hell hope it won’t trigger any seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy.
Everyone makes wheels now so it’s become impossible to keep track of them all. Nevertheless, Cymatics made a collab with, who else, Arlo Eisenberg and his Drug Receipts, and that’s 58mm of urethane that look both beautiful and addictive you can order right here.
VIDEOS
The Italian stallion Gabriel Adriani has a new part out. Insomnia was filmed and edited by Marc Moreno, who then went on to drop his own part, Fast Lane, which was filmed by Teles Angel. The latter also has a new part in the works and was spotted documenting various trips all over the place with his Furtius gang. More on that… Soon!
Back to Marc: with Flashback, released earlier this year, and all his work on the Mesmer brand in general, this new part surely puts him in the MVP conversation.
In UK news, James Bower & Connor Pearce share the bill in the latest Muzzle video, made by Joe Spray, and you should give it a watch. Uncle Nico Says So, and So Do We. Wheelscene has 50 minutes of Footwork now playing on their YouTube, which you’d already know if you’re one of their Patreon supporters. Sam Crofts traveled to Hamburg to work with the gentlemen Boysen & Büttner on his new skate promo. It has some very cool animation and some very serious stunts. Also, Hamburg is not in the UK.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Butter TV keeps on delivering quality edits with another fast-paced Justin Brasco section. Cardiac Arrest had us pumped up, for Justin shows no sign of slowing down, although he somehow managed to speak at a normal speed on the latest Jump Street episode.
In Midwestern news, Haunted hasn’t released a wheel in two years. They have, however, released a full-length VOD starring Luke Naylor, who’s been on a constant tear in recent years. Along with Koda Hult and Brian Weis, Luke can also be seen destroying the Bishop DIY in Al Dolega’s new Bishguy edit. Watch this one for free while you download the VOD.
Out West, Chris Calkins has been popping u-ey’s in his new No U-Turns edit for Blank. Directed by Daniel Scarano, it’s fast and smooth, just like Okie’s gotten us used to.
Lastly, Roces dropped a quick two-minute piece of their team skating at the NYC Invitational and Metrocard Classic. Not quite enough to make us ignore the fact that with the release of Yuto and Nils’ skates, and this year’s earlier trip to Valencia, that’s now three edits the Italian brand is supposed to drop before this year ends… Seems like the next few weeks are going to be some busy ones in Montebelluna!
EVENTS
Julien Cudot won the Pro division at the 2nd annual Carriers Open earlier this month, Tais Colares won the Bladies, and Joe Atkinson took Best Trick. The official edit is out, Be-Mag has a full report & video, and Jumbo delivers another 30 minutes of entertainment. It looked like a great time, and we’ll do our best to be there next year!
Until then, the X-Mas Jam will be back for yet another edition at the I-Punkt Skateland in Hamburg (that’s right, in Germany) on December 9th, and should be loads of fun too.
What’s also fun is that Cavin Brinkman is hosting the premiere for the 4th Plastic Pushers movie on that same night in Amsterdam, feel free to buy me a drink there. Cavin doesn’t drink beer, but there’s lots of merch for sale, feel free to support this ongoing project too!

On another note, Winterclash is sold out already, the earliest ever in its long history. Jojo and his crew haven’t even announced any riders, side events, movie nights, or panels yet. They’ve just been doing things right for over 20 years… Besides that one time they blew 100K on one single event, of course.
As always, the Clash will be held at Area 51 skatepark. If you were fast enough to get yourself a ticket, you could also buy me a drink in Eindhoven. Blue Collar has Duvel… Just saying.
MEDIA
The infamous Brian Barron, whom we all love and cherish under the name of Barno, has a full interview up on the Be-Mag website. ONE hosts a series of analog photographs by Jules Renault, documenting La Rue’s 2022 trip to California. And that’s pretty much it when it comes to “traditional” media.
On YouTube, Tom Moyse managed to piss off the skateboarding community with just one comment. The joke’s on them. David McNamara tried on some new skates. Jump Street has a cool Rewind with Levi van Rijn. Jumbo took a look at our beloved Michael Kraft’s setup. Ricardo Lino is injured. Get well soon, Lino! Brandon Drummond lives on an island. iRollerboot is streaming every day.
And that’s just way too much content for any human being with some sort of social life to try and catch up with, so get off your screen and go skate now!
